Future Deacs

Dear Incoming Wake Forest Student,

The Spirit of the Old Gold and Black (SOTOGAB) is the oldest college marching band in the state of North Carolina and is one of the country’s most recognizable pep bands in the NCAA basketball arena.

SOTOGAB is a part of the Wake Forest University Athletic Department and Music Department. It has quickly become one of the most prestigious groups on campus consisting of students from all over the world, every level of academic growth and almost every field of study offered at Wake Forest University. Many of our members have never marched, spun a flag or even played an instrument. Yet, through the desire to achieve and the needed hard work… there is a place for EVERYONE who wants to be a part of The Spirit of the Old Gold and Black.

Participation in SOTOGAB is so much more than just being a part of a cool tradition!!! Participation in SOTOGAB insures:

  • Free Admission and great seats to all athletic events (including bowl games or ACC and NCAA tournaments… even when sold out) with ALL FOOD AND ROOM EXPENSES PAID for away trips
  • A chance to be on TV and perform in front of large crowds at ACC and NCAA games
  • Opportunities for leadership and professional growth that will enhance your resume
  • A chance to move in to dorms before everyone else without all of the crowds
  • An opportunity to earn some EXTRA CASH through performance stipends
  • The opportunity to learn your way around campus before classes begin
  • Friendship with upperclassmen on your first day

The bottom line is… The Spirit of the Old Gold and Black is one of the best things that you can do on campus! Remember, the freshman year is the best time to get started in SOTOGAB and we need YOU! Let’s face it; SOTOGAB is a lot of reward for only 10 weeks of work. Also, you don’t need to have any prior experience, there is no audition, it doesn’t take a lot of time and your participation is worth every minute!

Currently, SOTOGAB is accepting applications for membership! Please fill out the online application as soon as possible on our website http://wfumb.groups.wfu.edu/index.php . Just click the page tab for “Future Deacs” and find the new member commitment form. We will send out all of the remaining details after you complete your application.
